Alfredo Amezaga is a 33 year old utility guy who hasn’t played in the majors since 2009, so of course he gets 2 hits and scores a run tonight for the Colorado Rockies.
Fortunately for the Giants, they countered Amezaga with their butt-kicking travel-sized shortstop, who ribbied the winning run in the bottom of the ninth. Mike Fontenot hit a deep fly ball to right field that brought Aaron Rowand in to break a 2-2 tie, giving the Giants a 3-2 win over the Rockies.
I gotta admit, I had little hope for the Giants in the bottom of the ninth. With Felipe Paulino pitching, Rowand led off with his second hit of the night. Freddy Sanchez singled, putting runners on first and second. Franklin Morales comes in to face Fontenot, who shows bunt. This seemed bad – if Fontenot successfully sac bunts, the Rockies will just intentionally walk Buster Posey to load the bases and face Aubrey Huff, who will either strike out or ground into a double play (you know it’s true). But then BAM – Morales throws a pitch so wild that it not only goes over Fontenot’s head, but over Ianetta’s head, too (that’s a short joke), advancing the runners. So then Fontenot does the only sensible thing, and hits his game winning sacrifice. That was pretty okay.
Aubrey Huff needs to hit the intimates department to pick up a little something new to bump up his game – he stranded six runners during the game, twice by ugly strike-outs. He did manage a double, but he mostly just looked lost.
Giants end the night up 2-0 in the series with the Rockies. I like it.
