So. The Phillies (71-39) again. The last time the teams met, less than two weeks ago, the Giants (62-49) took the series 2-1. Except this time around, the Giants have added Carlos Beltran (and Orlando Cabrera, I guess) and the Phillies have added Hunter Pence. Pence has been a beast since joining the Phillies, hitting .409 with an OPS of 1.595.
The Giants are coming off a shaky series against the Diamondbacks (winning just 1 of 3) and a horrible series against the Cincinatti Reds (swept!). The Phillies come into town having swept both the Pirates and the Rockies.
One thing remains the same – the two best pitching staffs in the Major Leagues will face off once more.
The 4-game series will also mark the returns of Jonathan Sanchez and Roy Oswalt from the DL.
Pitching probables for the series:
Thursday: Madison Bumgarner (6-10, 3.80 ERA, 1.30 WHIP) vs. Cliff Lee (10-7, 3.14, 1.12)
Friday: Jonathan Sanchez (4-5, 3.81, 1.42) vs. Vance Worley (7-1, 2.33, 1.10)
Saturday: Matt Cain (9-7, 3.10, 1.20) vs. Cole Hamels (12-6, 2.62, an otherworldly 0.97)
Sunday: Tim Lincecum (9-9, 2.77, 1.18) vs. Roy Oswalt (4-6, 3.79, 1.33)
Keys to the series? Score more runs than the other team. Easier said than done against Phillies pitching, but that’s as good as it’s going to get.
