The Giants acquired Jose Mijares off waivers from the Kansas City Royals yesterday. From the Mercury News:
The Giants claimed left-handed reliever Jose Mijares on waivers and could add him to the active roster as soon as Tuesday. Mijares, 27, had a 2.56 ERA in 51 appearances for the Kansas City Royals.
Bochy said Mijares would add depth to the bullpen, which is undergoing a transition at the back end. With Santiago Casilla scuffling, Bochy intends to use a committee to close out games and said left-hander Jeremy Affeldt will play an increased role. Affeldt’s move to the late innings led to the desire to add a third left-hander.
“We felt (Mijares) can be an asset to the bullpen,” Bochy said. “He’s had some success facing lefties and he’s pitched a lot.”
Mijares has a 3.04 ERA in five big league seasons with the Royals and Minnesota Twins, and Bochy said the Giants were surprised that they were able to pick him up on waivers.
“I don’t know the whole situation (with waivers),” Bochy said. “But he’s having a pretty good year.”
There’s really nothing to complain about this move, especially considering it’s a waiver wire move and the Giants do need some bullpen help because Brad Penny ain’t it.
Mijares not listed on Giants bullpen sheet today. No roster move yet. Scutaro at 2B, a day off for Theriot.

Y’know, it’d also be very disappointing if George Kontos was sent down instead of getting rid of Penny. Mainly because Kontos is having a good year while Penny is having a … Brad Penny year.
But this is the Giants, so that may happen. And it’s kind of sad.
Oh. And Xavier Nady was signed on a minor league contract. If that’s some sort of good news. I suppose. At least it’s just a minor league contract.
