Madison Bumgarner threw his second complete game tonight, against the same Nationals lineup that, well, we’ll just politely say that they beat the Giants pretty soundly last night. Madison Bumgarner also is not old enough to rent a car. For all the feting that Mike Trout and Bryce Harper (deservedly) get, I think it’s appropriate to take a moment to appreciate several things.
- Madison Bumgarner is very good at baseball.
- Madison Bumgarner will be a Giant for a nice long time.
- Madison Bumgarner is still very, almost comically, young.
And now, for the non-Bumgarner portion of tonight’s programming. Hunter Pence and Brandon Belt were both very productive tonight, and it was good to see not just because I’d like to stop worrying about “what are we gonna do with Belt?” and “oh god what if this trade is awful and DOOM?” Melky Cabrera and Buster Posey have been fantastic, and there’s no reason to necessarily expect that they’re going to implode, but no one, even the best hitter, can carry an offense on their own, and guys like Pablo Sandoval (healthy again!) and Hunter Pence and Brandon Belt hitting down in the order a bit are going to force pitchers to not pitch around Posey, and they’re going to, hopefully, cut down on the frequency with which Cabrera and Posey end up stranded in scoring position because the bottom half of the order can’t get anything done. It’s suddenly a much different lineup, and fingers crossed that we see this one more often than not.
Lincecum vs. Strasburg tomorrow at lunch. A series win would be mighty nice.
